Sega Genesis

Posted by on July 28, 2012

Amazingly enough in all my years collecting game stuff I’ve never owned a retro console that wasn’t put out by Nintendo.  I didn’t even play a console other than the Game Gear a couple times!  All of my friends owned Nintendo consoles so that’s all I was ever exposed to.  Once my friend Nathan over at videogamesarerad.com found this out he was astonished and decided this was unacceptable, so he gave me a model one Sega Genesis!

He also gave me this 6-Pack game which has Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, Columns and Super Hang On :)

Then I picked up Streets of Rage 2 from my local retro game store!

After playing the Genesis for a little, while my first thoughts were that it was like playing an arcade machine.  The way the controller is laid out with the 3 buttons and also cause most of the games I was playing were arcade game ports, it gave me the feeling that I had an at home arcade machine.  So far I have to say I’m pretty addicted to Streets of Rage II and Revenge of Shinobi, I’m really curious how Spiderman is going to make an appearance in the ninja game.

I’ve ordered a second controller so I can play 2 player Streets of Rage with someone and I also got an A/V cord so I can record some game footage, so look for that on here :) I really want to get Mega Man The Wily Wars just to see how different it is from the NES ones too!

Any other suggestions on games I should make sure to pick up?

The Mega Drive / Genesis is one of my all-time favourite consoles – there are so many good games to get!

    BEAT ‘EM UP
    Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter
    Splatterhouse 2 & 3
    Two Crude Dudes

    PLATFORMERS / RUN & GUN
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
    Castlevania: Bloodlines
    Contra: Hard Corps
    Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts
    Gunstar Heroes
    Kid Chameleon
    Mega Turrican
    Quackshot
    Ranger X (better with a 6-button controller)
    Shinobi III

    PUZZLE
    Columns
    Klax
Puyo Puyo / Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
    Volfied

    RPG/ADVENTURE
    Phantasy Star IV
    Beyond Oasis
    Soleil/Crusader of Centy

    SHOOTERS
    Forgotten Worlds
    Hellfire
    Steel Empire
    Thunderforce III & IV
    Wings of Wor

    PINBALL
    Dragon’s Fury
Sonic Spinball (much maligned, but I love it)

    MISC
    Flashback
    Toejam & Earl

There’s a bunch more but this is a good start off the top of my head. Also, it’s a good idea to grab at least one six-button controller – you never know what games can be enhanced by this!

  3. Off the top of my head: if you liked the arcade ports, Altered Beast is very common and cheap. Two very good Genesis exclusives are Contra: Hard Corps and Castlevania: Bloodlines. The last is kind of expensive, a flashcart like Everdrive is probably cheaper. Comix Zone is another good one. And, for multiplayer fun, I highly recommend Road Rash.

  4. Hi there, my name is Taylor. I didn’t see an email form so I didn’t know how else to contact you. I’m a fellow gamer girl who is trying to connect with other female website owners that are in the same area. I own a video game blog called gamergirltay.com and I’d love to talk with you about possibly becoming partners/affiliates. Thanks!

  5. Wow totally awesome! The Genesis is an awesome console. You should definitely check out the games in rom format first and then buy the physical forms of them. I always do that :p

  6. Nice!
Streets of Rage 2 is a great game. I’d also recommend Flashback, Mutant League Hockey, Vectorman, Contra: Hard Corps and Road Rash 3.
