Sorry I didn’t have a chance to post this weekend but I was busy playing a few games. With a little 1 year old running around I don’t get tons of time to play games so when the chance arises I have to take it. I tried out Boku Dracula-Kun for the Famicom and finally started playing Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals for the SNES. Figured I would give my first impressions of the two games.

First off was Akumajo Special: Boku Dracula-Kun, aka Demon Castle Special: Kid Dracula. I have heard a lot of good things about this game from Nathan at videogamesarerad.com (check out his site he has lots of cool retro stuff on there). Wow, it definitely did not disappoint! It is like the perfect mix of Castlevania and Mega Man with cute chibi characters thrown in.
You play as Kid Dracula who is the self proclaimed Demon Prince. He has awoken from a long sleep, and discovers that he has been challenged by Garamoth an evil dinosaur-like creature. Of course he accepts the challenge or else we wouldn’t have much of a game :p

I took a quick picture when I first started the game. You start with 3 lives and 3 hearts of health. On the left hand side you see what weapon you currently have equipped and as you get more you can use the select button to switch between them. As you go on through the level you collect coin type items and can earn more hearts of health. The controls are tight and precise so you always feel totally in control of what you are doing which is great for when you are trying to jump on platforms that fall and shoot bats at the same time.
When you get to the levels final boss you fight a little ghost looking monster, after you hit him 3 times he runs off and you think the fight is over until he brings out what looks to be his dad….

lol, I couldn’t believe this, I had to take a picture. Apparently he’s not a ghost or if he is he’s a KKK member. Maybe that’s why the game wasn’t ported to the NES.
After you defeat him you complete a mini game then you are congratulated with a victory dance. 3 girls dancing in front of an audience and they gave me a 1Up.

I’ve only completed the first level but so far it’s a fun and quirky game that you definitely have to check out. There is also a version for the Game Boy that is a remake of this game and a sequel too. I saw that Arino from Game Center CX plays this game, but I won’t watch it until I play a bit more of the game so I don’t ruin anything for myself

The second game I’ve had for almost 4 years now. Wow I can’t believe it’s been that long. I picked it up while on a trip to Vancouver at a used game shop that was run out of this guys house. He had tons of stuff but when I spotted Lufia II I had to get it. Cost me about $80 but wow was it worth it.
I remembered playing the original when I was younger and I really really enjoyed it. I couldn’t pass up on the chance to figure out how Maxim, Selan, Guy and Artea got into the huge battle with the Sinistrals that you play through at the start of the original Lufia game. This game takes everything that was awesome about the original and adds to it.
The one change that I was excited to see was when you are in a battle you target a bad guy you wanted to attack, problem was if one of your team mates killed it you would just attack an empty spot. Thank goodness that has been changed now, it was so frustrating before. They have also added some new features that seem to be from Legend of Zelda in there. You now slice down bushes with your sword, pick up pots and set them down and push statues around to sit on buttons to open doors etc. You also usually have to find a key to open the door at the end of the cave or dungeon you are in. Oh and I have to quickly mention the IP meter that fills as you are attacked then you can unleash special attacks depending on what armor and weapons you have equipped.
The other totally new change is the addition of capsule monsters. I only have one on my team so far, Foomy, but I will tell you what I do know. Once he joined my team the first thing I had to do was feed him. Thing is he doesn’t eat normal food, he eats things like weapons and armor. So I had to feed him a long sword and by feeding him the items he wants you help him level up and change classes. He levels up just like everyone else does, but the awesome part is he doesn’t have a health bar so you don’t have to worry about his health. When he does take a lot of damage he disappears for the rest of the fight but he comes back to life for the next one. Foomy attacks whoever he wants, but the extra help is much appreciated. Especially when you only have a couple people on your team.
So far I’ve only played for about 4.5 hours, but I have Maxim, Tia and Guy on my team so far. I can’t wait to see what happens between Maxim and Tia, because Maxim seemed to hook up with Selan at the beginning of the first Lufia game so I’m curious to see what happens to get them to that point.
Oh and I’m at level 18 or so, not just at 5 like in the picture :p
